What is good writing?

When I sit down and think to myself what is good writing, the first thing that comes to mind is something that catches my attention and engages my mind. When I sit down to read a book, look at a news article, or even scroll through my twitter feed I am looking to be engaged in what I am reading. The first step to good writing is to write something that engages your reader. What is so wonderful about the written language and the creative process of writing is that anyone can find a piece of literature they can engage in. Different writers have different styles, and different readers appreciate those different styles. I would not say that a writer who aims to please a specific audience is a bad writer, but I would argue that it is not good writing. Good writing is a piece of literature that can catch the attention and engage the masses. They can write pieces that influence others and could implement change. Their thoughts, ideas, or even just evidence they present will be something more than just a small audience reads. Writers who have mastered how to do this well excel in their industry and in their craft.
